V.35 (M/34) Surge Protector
The Patton EPG Model 546 V.35 surge protector guards V.35 data ports against damage and data loss due to transient surges. Whether due to nearby lightning strikes, electric motors, florescent lights or the normal operation of AC power protection equipment, data line transients can be hazardous to V.35 hardware. The Model 546 intercepts harmful data line transients and diverts them safely to chassis ground through a braided metal strap. The Model 546 is very compact (3.93"L x 2.0"W x 0.9"H), and plugs directly into an M/34 data port. All standard data, clocking and control signals on the CCITT V.35 interface are protected (although the Model 546 is also available with all 34 pins protected). The Model 546 uses sophisticated hybrid solid state circuits, which allow the unit to transparently support data rates up to 20 Mbps. The Model 546 is also self-resetting, which means that it can take repeated surge "hits" without degrading in performance or letting harmful energy through to the data port. And if the Model 546 should encounter a severe surge above its rated capacity, it will fail short to ground, thereby "sacrificing itself" to protect the connected V.35 hardware.
